Effective Remodeling Ideas for a Better Kitchen
The kitchen is just as important as any part of a home. In some cases, the kitchen even serves as the heart of the home rather than the living room. Therefore, if you plan to improve the look and functionality of your kitchen, you may want to consider these kitchen remodeling ideas before heading to your contractor.
- Decide to have wider walkways
There is a lot of movement in the kitchen. Since you will be here to cook (and to entertain guests, in some cases), you should make sure that you have ample space for people to walk and avoid hitting each other. Even your contractor will tell you that you should have a walkway going to the kitchen that measures 36 inches wide at the minimum. Then, your walkway around the kitchen should have a minimum of 42 inches wide.
- Direct people properly
To ensure safety in the kitchen, make sure that you direct children away from the stove or any areas that are accident-prone. Since children don’t know how to properly handle fire or knives, make sure that they cannot reach any of these. Moreover, direct traffic toward the refrigerator since most people will be getting stuff from there. Tell your contractor to provide more space in the area of the refrigerator so that multiple people can easily access it.
- Set the ideal height of the microwave
People in the house have varying heights, so make sure to set the ideal height to put the microwave. Put it at a height that the grown-ups can comfortably reach it but keep it away from children. Since the microwave is used in a quick manner, make sure that grown-ups have easy access to it.
- Decide if you need an island
The kitchen island is installed because of form rather than function. So, if you want to have a kitchen island, make sure that you have a huge space. Otherwise, you can simply put your stove and other cookware on one side. It will still have the same purpose although the appeal of the kitchen island is much better.
- Make cleaning up easy
The kitchen produces the majority of the garbage of a home. When you are cooking or eating, you tend to have more garbage from peelings, containers, and other stuff that keeps your food safe. Therefore, make sure that cleaning up is easy in the kitchen. There should be a cabinet where garbage bags are stored and that can be easily accessed. There should also be a garbage can that is not exposed and is out of reach from children. Make sure that you have the ability to segregate trash in the kitchen.
